Hail Damage Repair Sunshine Coast
With the recent severe thunderstorm on the Sunshine Coast, a number of properties have been damaged. If you’re in need of a roofer after the recent hail storm – whether that’s for a leak or to inspect for damage – here are a few helpful hints for choosing your roofer:
1. Are they licenced?
Licencing bodies vary across states and it is important that you do your due diligence and check their business or company is licensed to conduct roofing repairs. In Queensland that body is the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). In Queensland you can perform licence checks on the internet by typing in the phrase ‘QBCC licence check’, or going to straight to this page https://www.onlineservices.qbcc.qld.gov.au/OnlineLicenceSearch/VisualElements/SearchBSALicenseeContent.aspx.
2. Are they insured?
Insurance is a must and your contractor should have worker’s compensation and public liability. You can request copies of their Certificate of Currency to ensure they are covered.
3. Repair works insurance
This varies across states and it is insurance required by licencing bodies to cover your particular property for the works being undertaken. For example, in QLD it is called Queensland Home Warranty Scheme. You should request a copy of this certificate for your records.
4. Price isn’t everything
Choosing a repairer should never be solely based on price. Good quality materials, tradesmen, and proper insurances and licencing cost money. This doesn’t mean you can’t get quality work from a small business. It is just a warning against choosing your contractor based only on the price of their quote.
5. Steer clear of “storm chasers”
Any contractor who comes knocking on your door will usually ask you to sign documentation that implies they will look after your claim and repairs, and you have committed to engaging them as your repairer. Call your insurance company before you sign anything and discuss the situation with them. Don’t be pressured by deceitful tactics.
6. Obtain a contract and clear scope of works
Ensure your contractor provides you with a contract that outlines what time frame work will commence in, expected duration of the works, and a clear scope of works that is to be undertaken. In QLD any building work over $3,300 needs a contract. To see what contract your repairs need you can view them here https://www.qbcc.qld.gov.au/contracts-payments/contracts.
